:: COMPOSITIONS ::

Each tablet contains:
Probenecid 500 mg

 
:: INDICATIONS ::

Prevention of recurrences of gouty arthritis and the treatment of secondary hyperuricemia.

 
:: CONTRAINDICATIONS ::
  • Hypersensitivity to probenecid.
  • Children under 2 years of age.
  • Not recommended in persons with known blood dyscrasias or uric acid kidney stones.
  • Therapy with probenecid should not be started until an acute gouty attack has subsided.
 
:: DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATIONS ::

For adults:

  • As a uricosuric:
    The recommended adult dosage is 250 mg twice a day for one week, followed by 500 mg twice a day thereafter.
  • As a suppressant (renal tubular secretion):
    Treatment with penicillin or cephalosporin 500 mg, 4 times daily orally.
  • Penicillin therapy (gonorrhea)
    1 g of probenecid should be given orally with 4.8 million units of aqueous procaine penicillin G (given IM), or 1 g of ampicillin (given orally).

Dosage should be reduced in older patients in whom renal impairment may be present.

Pediatric:
As a suppressant:
Treatment with penicillin or cephalosporin:

  • Probenecid is contraindicated in children under 2 years of age.
  • Children 2-14 years of age (weighing until 50 kg), orally, 25 mg/kg body weight or 700 mg/m2 body surface, 4 times daily.
  • Then followed by 10 mg/kg body weight or 300 g/m2 body surface, 4 times daily.
  • For children weighing more than 50 kg, the adult dosage is recommended.
 
:: WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS ::

Use with caution in patients with a history of peptic ulcer and blood dyscrasia.

 
:: ADVERSE REACTIONS ::

Headache, gastrointestinal disorders (e.g. nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite); hypersensitivity reactions (e.g. anaphylaxis reactions, dermatitis, pruritus and fever); balance disturbance and anemia.

 
:: DRUG INTERACTIONS ::

Salicylate class, penicillin, sulfonamide, cephalosporin.
